Fibreglass, or Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), roofs have become increasingly popular over recent years. And for good reason. When properly installed a fiberglass roof is far more hard wearing then some other flat roof coverings such as felt. It is also seamless so there is less chance of seams failing and allowing water ingress.
Over time however, GRP roofs can begin to degrade. You might see cracks appearing or small grp pinholes beginning to show through where the top layer of resin has begun to wear away. These problems are often due to improper installation – fibreglass is a great product, but it is sensitive to application and it’s easy for installers to make mistakes. They might apply the resin too quickly or not apply enough. Or they might not have measured the catalyst correctly or applied it at the wrong temperature. This is when problems start and leaks can happen. It also just doesn’t look great.
